Bat House Survey

Do you currently have a bat house near your home? Have you had one in the past? If so, we'd like to hear about it.

Please send us information on whether or not your bat house is currently, or has ever been, occupied. Also we would like to know how long the box has been hung, on what type of structure the box is/was hung (pole, tree, house, etc.), and the direction the box is/was facing (N, S, E, W).

Front Range Bat Roost Study

Little is known of the roosting ecology of bats in Colorado. CBS, in partnership with the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks departments, has been conducting a study to determine the status of bat populations in the Front Range and to map the locations of bat roosts, in particular, nursery roosts where females of the same species congregate to raise their young. We are also measuring temperature and humidity of roost sites to determine why species choose the roost sites they utilize.

Educational Bat Trunks

CBS has built an Educational Bat Trunk that can be used by educators to teach children about bats. The trunk contains educational information in the formats of books, video tapes, displays (such as a real, mounted bat skeleton), educational exercises, games, and hand puppets. The trunk can be ordered through the University of Colorado Museum's Science OutReach Program. The trunk can be mailed anywhere in the state. Please call (303) 492-1666 for details. Another trunk has recently been built and will be housed on the Western Slope.
